Josh Hazlewood has been cleared to join Australia's squad for the initial Test against England following fitness concerns, however, teammate Sean Abbott is unavailable

Both suffered muscle problems playing for NSW versus Victoria in domestic cricket this past Wednesday

Scans showed the 34-year-old Hazlewood avoided a muscle strain. The 33-year-old Abbott, yet to debut, sustained a "moderate grade" injury

Team captain Cummins is unavailable for the opening Test, commencing later this month, so the loss of another experienced fast bowler such as Hazlewood would have been a significant setback

Abbott was not expected to participate at the Perth match, while Hazlewood will combine fellow quicks Starc and Boland as the primary pace attack

Cummins, who is recovering from a back injury, is thought to be on track to return for the second Test in Brisbane starting on 4 December

Batter Steve Smith will captain the side while Cummins is out

Following other Aussie squad members, the bowler took part in ongoing fixtures of state games building up to the Ashes

Before this week, he hadn't featured a first-class match for New South Wales for over twelve months

He noticed discomfort in his posterior chain during the final stages of the opposition's batting recently and left the field as a precaution

The two bowlers batted in their team's second batting effort during their defeat by 300 runs

"We're a week away from the Test series - typically prefer the side of caution," said Cummins

"They wanted to find out what was happening prior to testing it that could worsen the injury more severe"

"He seldom shows him chipper, so it was good to witness his smile"

"He's aware of his condition really well. He appeared a little bit worried (and) wanted to get it checked out"

Abbott has won 57 appearances for Australia in ODI and T20 cricket
