Significant Internet Failure Hits Dozens Websites and Applications

A widespread online failure has affected dozens websites and apps around the world, and users experiencing problems getting online following issues at the cloud computing system.

The impacted platforms include Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to multiple Amazon-owned services including its primary shopping platform and the Ring device manufacturer.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was impacted in addition to its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were additional accounts of difficulties reaching the HMRC site on the start of the week. Also in the UK, multiple Ring customers turned to online platforms to state their home gadgets were failing.

Just within Britain, reports of disruptions on specific platforms reached the tens of thousands for each app.

Amazon reported that the problem began in the east coast of the America at AWS, a section that provides vital online infrastructure for many companies, who rent out resources on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the world’s largest web hosting system.

Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), the company announced “higher failure rates and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the east coast of the America. The widespread consequence was seen to hit services globally, with the outage tracking website indicating outages with the identical platforms in multiple continents.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors online failures, also reported a surge in issues on the start of the week, with many of them situated in the Virginia area, the site of the eastern US data center where the company stated the outage began.
