Trump and Japan's New Premier Exchange Compliments and Vow to Strengthen ‘Remarkable’ Relationship

During a latest trip to Japan's capital, ex- American leader Trump and Japan's recently elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi exchanged warm compliments and vowed to enhance the currently robust bilateral ties.

Highlights from the Encounter

Donald Trump commended Takaichi as a ‘exceptional’ leader and applauded her on becoming Japan's inaugural female prime minister. In their discussions at Tokyo's Akasaka Palace, the former president expressed confidence that Takaichi would become one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of Japan.

Takaichi, identified as a close associate of former Japanese leader Abe, applauded his efforts to address global conflicts and reportedly vowed to put forward Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trade and Security Agreements

The two governments revealed a series of joint initiatives in areas such as power, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals. Japanese companies are considering funding of up to $400bn in the United States.

Additionally, Japan had earlier pledged $550bn in strategic US investments, loans, and guarantees as part of an arrangement to secure exemption from the former president's import duties.

These actions are seen as potentially reducing any future demands from Trump for Japan to increase its military spending. Takaichi addressed this by promising to fast-track proposals to raise military budget to two percent of gross domestic product.

Additional Political Developments

  • Trump left the door open to a third term, though it is constitutionally impossible. Trump stated he ‘would love’ to serve again but won't exploit a vice presidential workaround.
  • Michigan congresswoman Rashida Tlaib reacted to his statements, saying, “No way in hell we’re going to let that happen.”
  • Gavin Newsom indicated he will decide on a 2028 presidential run after the 2026 midterm elections.
  • The head of the US biggest government employees union demanded an end to the government shutdown, which is now the second longest in American history.
  • House Speaker Mike Johnson blasted Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries for supporting a candidate in the New York City mayor’s race.
  • Indiana governor Braun declared a special session to redraw congressional districts.
  • Opposition leaders in several states are planning map changes in reaction to GOP efforts.
“Everything I know from Shinzo and others, you will be one of the great prime ministers,” Trump said to the prime minister. “I’d also like to congratulate you on being the first woman prime minister. It’s a big deal,” he added.

The encounter underscores the continuing importance of the US-Japan partnership and sets the stage for further cooperation on trade, defense, and foreign policy areas.
